Online Distribution and More

January 19th, 2011

An interview with President Mike Butler

Monster Packaging looks to provide lowest overall transactional cost, user friendly web site navigation and customer resource guides

Business name: Monster Packaging
Owner: Mike Butler
Address: 208 E. Morrissy Dr Elkhorn WI
Web Site: www.monsterpackaging.com
Type of business: Online packaging and shipping supplies distributor

Why did you start the business?  There are a lot of places to buy shipping supplies from brick and mortar to online sites.  After extensive analysis of these options I identified there were a number of areas that we could do better.  Those key areas were generating the lowest overall transactional cost, building the most user friendly navigable web site and providing educational resources to allow our customers to purchase the right items.

How did you get into this line of business?  I worked for a brick and mortar business that sold packaging and shipping supplies for three years.  In the early 90’s I took a job at a national distribution company as Director of e-commerce sales and marketing.  I was responsible for finding companies who were looking to take their brick and mortar business strategy to an online format.  The combination of both jobs led to the development of monsterpackaging.com.

What types of products and services does your company offer?  Our main product categories are packaging and shipping supplies.  We also provide janitorial, safety and warehouse supplies.  The products include corrugated boxes, poly bags, sealing tape, mailing envelopes, poly mailers and much more.

What has been the biggest challenge in your business?  Trying to keep our overall product costs as low as possible.  It seems like daily we receive price increases from our manufactures.  We have been able to combat increases by purchasing multiple truckloads of product and bringing it into our 46,000 sq. ft. facility.

What is something you think is different about your web site from your competitors?  From the beginning we have always been active in creating tools and educational resources to add to our site.  We feel strongly the more educated our customers are the more likely they well order the right product the first time.  This eliminates cost, time and frustration on both sides.  It is our goal that our customers make the most informed buying decisions.

What are your plans for the future?  Pretty simple, continue to keep our customers overall transactional cost as low as possible, continue to improve the sites navigation and keep adding educational resources to give our customers all the information they need to make the right buying decision.
